Lemons from the Baksa District of Assam to be available in London

A huge consignment of 80 tonnes of lemons from the Baksa District of Assam will exported to London over the next two months. This is the latest of the organic farm produce from farms of Northeast East India to be made available in international markets.

Lemons from Assam have a very high demand in both local and international markets. This is primarily due to its richness in both flavor and nutrients. The prices usually come down during the monsoons due to high production and less shelf time. But the still the wholesale price remains between one and two rupees per piece in the local market. However for the export purpose, these lemons were procured at a price of Rs. 30 per kilogram. Each kilogram usually contains about five to ten lemons based on their size, type and maturity.

The first consignment consisting of around six hundred kilograms has been already sent. This export has been handled by the Nilachal Agro Producer Company Ltd. This initiative has also been supported by the District Agriculture Officer and Deputy Commissioner of the Baksa District. It has also been supported by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority of the state. APEDA has also been supporting similar projects in the state since a long time.
