A Guide to the Lemons of Assam

Lemons happen to be an essential part of the Assamese culinary culture. Belonging to the Citrus Family, these refreshing fruits are a rich source of Vitamin C and minerals.

The following are the different varieties for lemons that grown in the state. Gul Nemu and Kazi Nemu are the most common ones in the state, while Elaichi and Jora are comparatively rare.

1. Gul Nemu

Gul Nemu literally means spherical lemons in Assamese. It is the smallest and the most aromatic of all the varieties. Please mind that IT IS NOT the same one that is found in central India.

The exceptional aroma of this variety is variety is what makes it so close to the hearts of the Assamese foodies. And these are often used to make pickles.

2. Kazi Nemu

This is commonly known as the Assam Lemon. Kazi Nemu is larger in size than the Gul Nemu and has a different aroma. Not as strong as the Gul Nemu, but it is truly refreshing.

Its larger in size compared to all the rest except for the last one on this list, the Jora Tenga.

3. Elaichi Nemu

A sweet smell is what differentiates it from the other type of the lemons. It is quite similar to the popular Gondhoraj Lebu of West Bengal, but definitely not the same.

4. Jora Tenga

This is not exactly a member of the lemon family, but it is refreshing as the others. You can easily recognize it by the larger size and thicker skin compared to the others.

Less aromatic than the rest of the members of this list, but it is definitely more juicy. The inner peel is often consumed my many with chilies and salt.
