Singapore Becomes the First Country to Allow Lab-Grown Meat Sale

Singapore became the first government in the world to allow sale of cultured meat after it granted permission to a San Franciso based start-up ‘Eat Just Inc.’ regulatory approval to sell lab-grown chicken. Lab Cultured meat is meat produced by in vitro cell culture of animal cells, instead of from slaughtered animals.

Following the approval of the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), the product of Eat Just has been approved as an ingredient in chicken bites. It is created from cultured chicken cells.

As per reports, the Chicken bites will be available in a Singapore restaurant initially. It will be later made available into dining and retail establishments in the country. Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of Eat Just in a report said that the price of the product will be equal to premium chicken. “We’ve been eating meat for many hundreds, thousands of years, always needing to kill an animal to eat — until now,” he said in a report by CNN. According to the company, the cultured meat has a high protein content and minerals.

The product is produced in a bioreactor which facilitates a biological reaction. For the time being, the meat will be sold only within Singapore. The company wishes to expand its sales, including cultures beef, in the US and Western Europe
