Durga Puja enters the Intangible Cultural Heritage List of UNESCO

Durga Puja is celebrated in a lot of diverse ways in different parts of the country. But its a whole new story when you visit the state of West Bengal where the goddess is treated just like everyone’s own mother. The main festival of the state goes way beyond the usual 3-4 days affair in the rest of the country. And it has just entered the list of Intangible Cultural Heritages curated by UNESCO.

The capital city of the state, Kolkata goes on full celebration mode during these days of the year. With age old old as well as new pujas showing extraordinary creativity and decoration. The festivities during these days equal, if not exceed the celebration of any other festival in the country.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization works towards preservation of different unique cultures across the world. In order to do the same, UNESCO selects few events or festivals to make their names in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritages. The idea is to protect these traditions and celebrations from the effects of globalization and thus lose the originality.

And the latest event to make its way to this list is the legendary Durga Puja of Kolkata.
