World Environment Day 2023 – Solutions to Plastic Pollution

Countries across the world celebrate world environment day on June 5. It is an effort by the United Nations to encourage and educate people about the necessity of preserving the environment. The theme for World Environment Day 2023 is “Solutions to Plastic Pollution”. And the host country for the year is Côte D’Ivoire located in the western part of Africa. They adopted this year’s theme with the aim of spreading awareness. And the topic was the increasing menace of plastic. As these materials take a very long time to degrade naturally, plastics continue to cause problems for the environment. Not only does it lead to direct deaths of terrestrial, avian and aquatic species, but also renders land unusable for agricultural needs.

One of the latest forms of the pollutant is called micro plastics. Natural elements like sun, wind and water break plastic products into minute particles. These particles then find their way into the food cycle starting with small fishes. And gradually manage to make its way into the human body and travel through the bloodstream. Thus causing medical issues in several people.

Organizations across the state hosted a variety of events to mark the occasion including tree plantation programmes in many places. And awareness campaigns were organized in educational institutions and social organizations. NRL undertook a massive plantation program to plant 10000 saplings of different plants. The company carried out this project in the Golaghat district. Several institutions organized plantation programs in Guwahati on World Environment Day 2023.

Climate change has adversely affected several parts of the world in recent times.People of Assam and the entire northeastern India are suffering from an intense heat wave. With the lack of rains, the capital city of Guwahati is reeling under water shortage.
