2nd Manipur Olympic Games begin in Mapal Kangjeibung

The 2nd edition of the Manipur Olympic Games was flagged off yesterday at the Mapal Kangjeibung. The start event saw the presence of La Ganesan, the Governor and N.Biren Singh, the chief minister of of Manipur among other dignitaries. The first version of the games was played 34 years ago in 1988.

The Manipur Olympic Games will see men and women compete in multiple sports in the coming days. The games will be played in multiple locations from the 26th till the completion on the 30th of August. According to a report around 6000 sports persons from across the state will participate in this event. A total of 34 disciplines are part of this event including traditional games of the state. It has been organised by Manipur Olympic Association and the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports.

When it comes to sports, Manipur is the leader from the Northeastern part of the country. This small state has produced several world class players in multiple disciplines across the year.

Located in the capital city Imphal, Mapal Kangjeibung is the oldest polo ground in the world still in play. Games usually begin in autumn and continue to spring in the Mapal Kangjeibung.
