After Assam, Meghalaya Targets Ropeway Service

After Assam, now Meghalaya is considering a ropeway project in the capital city of Shillong.

The preliminary costing of the cable car project is estimated at ₹ 84 Cr. Chief Minister of the state, Conrad Sangma informed that the state government is targeting to complete it within 18 months post the issue of work order.

The formalities with land owners for the Umiam Ropeway will be closed by September 2020. The authorized departments are expected to complete all the formalities and start the works.

The Umium Lake near Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya, is one of the popular tourist destinations. People from both Assam and Meghalaya visit this location for recreation and water – sports activities. It is also a popular pit-stop for travelers on the busy Guwahati – Shillong road.

Recently, Assam inaugurated the longest river ropeway of India in the capital city Guwahati. The unveiling was done by Assam’s Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with Guwahati Development Department Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya. Apart from the tourism angle, this project is also aimed to serve the transportation needs between the north and south banks of the city.

Much to the dismay of Guwahatians, just two days after the inauguration, the ropeway had to close temporarily due to some technical issues. However it was fixed soon after.
