Doul Govinda Mandir : A Krishna Temple by the Brahmaputra

Guwahati is an ancient city and has its mentions in the Mahabharata as Pragjyotishpur. And it has some very old and beautiful temples distributed across the biggest city of Northeast India. The Doul Govinda Mandir is a beautiful temple of Lord Krishna located on the northern banks of the Brahmaputra. Bhog or prasad is offered here daily.

Festivals

All celebrations related to Lord Krishna are organised in the Doul Govinda Mandir. Holi festival is the most colorful festival of India, and it is celebrated with great pomp in this temple. Janmashtami is another grand celebration that takes place in the temple premises.

Apart from these two events, both the new year’s days of the Assamese and Christian calendar also see huge crowds. The months of Bhado and Magh of the Assamese calendar also find many devotees in this temple.

How to Reach

There are three ways to reach the Doul Govinda Mandir in Guwahati.

  • The first and the most time consuming one is the road way. One can use this route if you care coming via railways or airways.
  • The second one its the most scenic. One can drive to the Guwahati Ropeway Terminal located in Kachari and then use the ropeway to cross the river. The temple is at a walking distance form the terminal located in North Guwahati. E- rickshaw services are also available.
  • The third option is to take the ferry service across the mighty Brahmaputra river. Two wheelers are allowed onboard, but the number of four wheeler allowed are limited. Also since ferry services are sometimes cancelled due to adverse weather, it is suggested to confirm beforehand. E – rickshaws are available from the pier to the temple.
