Tourists to get Access to Upper Stretches of Ladakh

Extending the limits of visits for the civilians of the country, the Indian Army is planning to open new parts of Ladakh for tourists. This includes locations in the Chang Chenmo sector near Pangong Lake. These locations are near the border posts which saw conflicts between Indian and Chinese troops a few years back. Entries for tourists will be opened in a phased manner.

According to reports, Marsimik La will be opened and tourists allowed till Tsogtsalo in the first phase.  Located at an elevation of nearly 5600 meters, it is next to the meeting point of the Rimdi Chu and Chang Chemo rivers. Located about 160 kilometers east of Leh, this location lies very close to the border with China near Pangong Lake. The second phase will see tourists being allowed to travel upto the Hot Springs. This is located further up from Tsogtsalu. It also houses a memorial for ten CRPF jawans martyred by the Chinese on October 21, 1959.

Although the ILP system was removed in 2021, access to some border locations have been restricted for civilians. These new locations have been opened for travelers by the Ladakh administration as a part of tourism promotion. It will also help the local people as new infrastructure will be created as the number of tourists increases.

The Ladakh administration has already prepared the creation of the necessary infrastructure. These include the creation of washrooms, medical facilities and selfie points along the way. The necessary construction will be carried out by the Border Roads Organisation. Funding from the same will be provided by the district administration. And the police will set up check posts in the region.

This development is expected to attract a large number of tourists, especially offroading and extreme condition driving enthusiasts to the region.
