Ugratara Devalaya : Divinity and Serenity in the heart of the City

Located in the heart of the city is the ancient temple called Ugratara Devalaya. The divine setting of this temple and the serenity of the pond next to it makes this one of the must visit locations of Guwahati.

This is a Shakti Temple similar to the Kamakhya Mandir which is located about six kilometers away. Ugra Tara, an form of the Mother Goddess worshiped as the main deity in this temple. Lord Shiva is also worshiped alongside the Goddess in the temple. Apart from the temple itself, the adjacent Jur Pukhuri or twin ponds, is another attraction. Build during the Ahom rule, it is now the home to hundreds of geese which stay and add beauty to the location.

Main celebration of Ugratara Devalaya is the Durga Puja and it is also the best time to visit this temple. Also thousands of devotees visit the temple on Navratri and Shivratri. The temple is open from morning to evening everyday except during the Ambubachi Mela. Apart from the regular pujas, a lot of people celebrate other auspicious events in this temple. These include birthdays and annaprasanna ceremonies among others.

How to reach Ugratara Devalaya.

The temple is located about twenty kilometers away from the nearest airport which is Guwahati. It is almost one kilometer away from the Guwahati Railway Station. And the distance from the Inter State Bus Terminal is about twelve kilometers.
