Guwahati, July 16: Assam reaffirmed its commitment to developing football at the grassroots as the Trophy Tour of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup arrived in Guwahati on Thursday ahead of the tournament’s fifth consecutive edition in the state.
The Trophy Display and Press Conference, held at Hotel Vivanta, was led by Assam Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Shri Biswajit Daimary and attended by senior officials from the Government of Assam, the Indian Army, and representatives of the Durand Cup Organising Committee. Defending champions NorthEast United FC were represented by forward Parthib Gogoi.
Addressing the gathering, Daimary highlighted football’s deep roots in Assam and stressed the need to strengthen grassroots development through improved infrastructure, playgrounds, and competitive opportunities for young players. He said continued investment in youth and collaboration with organisations such as the Indian Army would help elevate Indian football.
Maj Gen Dinesh Kumar Singh, Vice Chairman of the Durand Cup Organising Committee, described the tournament as an important platform for nurturing young talent, while Parthib Gogoi said NorthEast United FC looked forward to defending its title with the backing of home supporters in Guwahati.
Following the ceremony, the iconic Durand Cup, President’s Cup and Simla Trophy embarked on a two-day tour across Guwahati, visiting prominent landmarks including the Assam Legislative Assembly, Bir Lachit Borphukan Statue, IIT Guwahati and City Centre Mall, giving football fans an opportunity to view the historic trophies up close.

The 135th IndianOil Durand Cup will be held from July 25 to August 23 across Kolkata, Shillong, Imphal, Guwahati and Ranchi. Guwahati will host six Group F matches featuring NorthEast United FC, Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC, Bodoland FC and FC 1, further highlighting Assam’s growing role in Indian football.
