Kamakhya Temple Reopens, Devotees Can Only Perform Parikrama

The Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati reopens its door for devotees on Sunday after being closed since March due to Covid-19. However, the ‘garbagriha’ or the sanctum of the temple will remain closed for the devotees. The devotees can perform parikrama or revolutions and offer prayers from outside the door of the main temple.

Santization chambers have been set up for whole body sanitization before entering the premises to contain the spread of Covid-19. Devotees with covid-negative report not old than three days can go inside the premises. The rest will have to undergo rapid antigen test. As per reports, devotees have been allowed only 15 minutes to remain inside the temple premises after it reopens. Reportedly, there may be some changes in the timings during Durga Puja.

Earlier, the Kamrup Metropolitan district along with Kamakhya Temple Management Authorities decided to reopen the temple from September 24th. The authorities also issued a set SOPs to be followed by the devotees. Read the SOPs here.

Even the grand Ambubachi Mela happened just as a formality behind the closed doors of the temple for the Covid -19 global pandemic.
