Cargo ship reaches Guwahati from Patna via Bangladesh

A cargo ship carrying food gains from the city of Patna was reached the city of Guwahati today. The cargo ship named MV Lal Bahadur Shastri left the Gaighat port of Patna for the Pandu port of Guwahati.

Water transportation is one of the oldest forms of transporting cargo. And even as of today the bulk of cargo across the world is moved via waterways. It is way cheaper than any other forms of travel but on the downside, it requires more time.During the British era, almost all transportation used to happen via the rich river ways of the country. Huge vessels called streamers used to carry essential supplies from the central part of the country to the eastern and northeastern parts.

The Ganga and the Brahmaputra are the broadest rivers in the country and provides cheap and efficient avenues cargo transportation. So the Government of India decided to send a cargo ship from one of the ports in Central India to one in Northeast India. The ship left on the 5th of February and reached the destination on the 6th of March. It carried 200 metric tonnes of food grains. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal was present for both the events. This success will not only boost the waterways, but also drastically reduce prices of essential commodities.
