WAMUL completes Beekeeping Training Program

The National Dairy Development Board in association with National Bee Board conducted a scientific beekeeping training program under Mini Mission-I of National Beekeeping and Honey Mission. The West Assam Milk Union Limited, was empowered by the NDDB as the Cluster Based Business Organisation for the formation of a Honey Farmer Producer Organisation and development of Honey clusters.

This project aims to create Beekeepers FPO and Honey cluster in WAMUL’s operational areas of Hajo under Kamrup Rural district. This will also create a new source of livelihood for the milk producers along with the existing dairy value chain. The week long training program in scientific beekeeping, under Mini Mission-I of NBHM, was organized from the 21st to the 27th of February. It was hosted at the Regional Institute of Livestock Entrepreneurship Management. The training program had 25 participants and hosted by the Tanishk Graamin Seva Sansthan by two trainers namely Sanjeev Tomar and Vishnu Jangle. They were joined by Pranesh Roy, who is providing training in different districts of Assam.

National Beekeeping and Honey Mission was announced by the Government as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat project. This scheme is aimed at the overall development and promotion of beekeeping in India and to achieve the objectives of a Sweet Revolution. Development of beekeeping will also generate employment in rural India and has potential of augmenting income of farmers. It may be mentioned that honeybees are vital in sustaining plant biodiversity, and beekeeping acts as a catalyst in increasing yield of major agricultural and horticultural crops through cross pollination.
