Snakes to Mind in Northeast India – World Snake Day

Snakes of a large number of varieties live in different parts of Northeast India. And on the occasion of World Snake Day 2020, Discover East brings to you a list of venomous snakes of this region.

Snake Venom can be any of four type. They are as follows.

  • Proteolytic venom – which dismantles the molecular surroundings, including the bite region.
  • Hemotoxic venom – acts on the heart and cardiovascular system.
  • Neurotoxic venom – acts on the nervous system and brain.
  • Cytotoxic venom has a localized action at the site of the bite.

Venomous Snakes of Northeast India

1. Banded Krait

The bright yellow and black bands is what makes this snake easily identifiable. With Neurotoxic venom, this beautiful reptile can cause a quick death unless treated properly. Known mainly to feed on other snakes, this breed is often spotted during the monsoons.

2. Monocled Cobra

Another beautiful and deadly serpent found in this region is the Monocled Cobra . Mostly feeding on rodents, this snake doesn’t shy away from larger beings. The venom in this case are neurotoxins.

3. King Cobra

This snake finds its place in mythology worldwide, specially in the countries of Asia. The King Cobra is the longest venomous snake of the world. Its size, speed and cocktail of Neurotoxins and cytotoxins is what makes this serpent revered by many.

4. Black Krait

The Black Krait is endemic to the South Asian region. The beautiful black color is what makes it differentiable from any other variety of snakes of northeast India. It can give a bite loaded with neurotoxins.

5. White Lipped Pit Viper

The White Lipped Pit Viper is a member of the Pit viper family and is commonly found in the South Asian region. It has Hemotoxic venom which can cause severe pain to death if not treated properly.

6. Russell’s Viper

The second member of the Big Four of Indian Snakes in this list, the Russell’s Viper is common in the Asian region. So much so that it finds its mention in the folklore of Manipur. Its diet comprises of rodents,but the neurotoxic venom can kill you if untreated.

7. Bamboo Pit Viper

Another poisonous member of the Pit Viper family the Bamboo Pit Viper is commonly found in the rain forests of northeast India. With a diet of birds, lizards and rodents, this serpent releases a mix of hemotoxins and neurotoxins.
