Pani Puri: Google Celebrates this Indian Street Food

This well-admired street food of the country has many names and many variants. Fuchka, Pani Puri, Gol Gappa and Gup Chup are some of the popular names of this snack. And Google has decided to celebrate this popular food item with a small game on July 12.

Google has launched an interactive game doodle to celebrate pani puri. This game celebrates the anniversary of an event that took place in Indore of Madhya Pradesh on this day in 2015. Dainik Bhaskar and a local eatery named Indori Zayka set the world record for serving the most flavours of this food. They presented a total of 51 flavour options under the guidance of Masterchef Neha Shah.

Pani puri is traditionally a crispy shell stuffed with a variety of ingredients. The usual ones include mashed potatoes, chickpeas, peas and nuts mixed with spices. It is then filled with flavoured water and served. More exotic ones have dry fruits and other added flavours. Some people even serve them with chocolate coating on the crust or fillings. Some even more exotic varieties are served with alcohol like vodka or white rum instead of the water.

Although the fillings used change the flavour of the pani puri, it is the flavoured water used that ultimately decides its final taste. A few of the popular ones are tamarind flavour sour water and jal jeera flavoured water. Different ingredients like mint leaves, green chillies, salt, and sometimes even garlic are added to the water. Spices like cumin and coriander seeds are also added by some sellers. Its ease of creation and variety of available flavour profiles and ease to tweak for individual choice makes it one of the most popular street foods. The cheap prices of ingredients used, have also increased the popularity of pani puri.
