Luggage limits fixed by the Indian Railways

The Indian Railways is one the largest transporters of the country both in terns of people and goods. They have now decided to fix the maximum limits of luggage each passenger can carry with them.

The Indian Railways usually allow passengers to carry heavy goods. Although a luggage weight capping existed since a long time, hardly any checking was done. Passengers could carry any number of bags or packages of any size as long as it fit under the beds. It is not uncommon for travelers to keep their packages in the empty space near the toilets. Some people also put their access baggage in areas designated for other passengers. And this often leads to a lot of conflict during the journey.

As per the new regulation published by the Indian Railways, the following are limits per class.

  • For the 2nd class ticket holders, thirty five kgs will be free. A margin of ten more kilos will be allowed while the maximum permitted capacity is seventy kgs.
  • For sleeper class ticket holders, forty kgs will be free. A margin of ten kilos will be allowed with the maximum of eighty kilos.
  • Three tier AC and AC Chair Car will have the same capacity as that of the sleeper class. But the maximum limit is forty kgs.
  • Two tier AC and First Class will have a free allowance of fifty kgs. A margin of ten kgs is allowed with the maximum limit of hundred kilos.
  • The allowance of AC First Class is seventy kilos with a margin of fifteen kilos. A maximum of 150 kgs can be allowed in this category.

Passengers will have to arrive in the station atleast half an hour before the time of departure. They have to verify the weight and pay accordingly if found necessary. One can pay for extra luggage at the time of booking the ticket or at the time of weighing.
