Assam: 400 students take part in Rhino Goes to School campaign

Guwahati: The Rhino Goes to School campaign was undertaken for students of schools located near two rhino-bearing areas of Assam. Over 400 students from different schools attended this event organised by Aaranyak.

They organised one of the programmes in Luit Jatiya Vidyalaya, Sengelimora, Orang. Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve authorities also collaborated for this event. It saw the participation of over 250 students. 

As part of the awareness campaign, students learned about diverse aspects of rhinos. Experts explained the animal’s characteristics, habitat and role in ecosystems to the students. The experts also interacted with the students and answered their queries.

They organised an open quiz competition alongside the visual presentation on the subject. They also conducted interactions with the state animal of Assam, the Greater one-horned rhinoceros. The experts also undertook talks on local flora and fauna.

Babul Islam, Headmaster of Luit Jatiya Vidyalaya; Baharul Islam, President of Fatasimolu Block;  Abul Kalam, President, Fatasimolu NC; Khairul Basher, local conservationist; Babukanta Daw and Bipul Gonju, members of Aaranyak were also present in the programme.

Another similar awareness event was conducted by Aaranyak in collaboration with Orang National Park & Tiger Reserve authorities. This event at Vidyasagar Jatiya Vidyalaya, Rowmari, Orang saw the participation of over 120 students.

They conducted another similar outreach event at the Medokgaon ME School, Bonkual in the  Golaghat district of Assam. This event saw the participation of over 50 students of different age groups. Babukanta Daw and Akash Morang, members of Aaranyak were present for the programme.

The Rhino Goes to School campaign aims at educating students living on the edge of rhino-bearing areas. The outreach event also emphasised the importance of citizens sustaining wildlife. And thereby maintaining the balance of the ecosystem in order to protect wildlife. The organisations have conducted several such initiatives in the past towards educating the students.
