Umiam Bridge: Restriction Dates, Timings and  Alternate Routes

Shillong: The authorities have announced the temporary closure of the Umiam Bridge for traffic. The steps have been taken to ensure the smooth conduct of the maintenance work. 

 The Umiam Bridge will be inaccessible to the public for six hours on March 31. Movement of all vehicles will be stopped from 8 AM to 2 PM on Sunday. Following this period, small vehicles will be allowed to travel. And only one side of the bridge will be available for such movement. 

From 2 PM on March 31 to 7 AM on April 8, vehicles will be allowed to ply on the bridge. Only one side of the bridge will be used during this duration. And only vehicles with weight up to 4 tons will be allowed to ply on the road. Also, vehicles including carries with heights up to 2.5 meters from the ground will be allowed. The bridge will remain closed to any other vehicles. After 7 AM on April 8, vehicles with weight up to 15 tons will be allowed to ply on one side of the bridge.

Alternate Routes for Umiam Bridge

The authorities have also announced a few alternate routes for the movement of vehicles during this duration. These routes will be available from March 31 to April 8, 2024, for the Guwahati-Shillong route. 

Shillong-Mawtawar- Umiam Airport Road (VIP Road)-Lad Umroi Road. It is a 45 km-long route which will allow the movement of light motor vehicles alone. Shillong-NEIGRIHMS- New Shillong Township- Diengpasoh-Lad Umroi Road. This 63.20 km long road will also allow the movement of only light motor vehicles. UCC-Mawlyndep- Mawmaram Road (for Vehicles proceeding towards Mairang/Nongstoin). It is a 39.3 km long route available for LMVs.

Shillong- Laitkor- Mawryngkneng-Lad Umroi Road will also be available. This 92 km long route will allow the movement of all vehicles including HMVs and buses. Lastly, Shillong-Mairang- Nongkhlaw-Guwahati Airport Road. This 120 km long road also allows the movement of HMVs and buses.
