Guwahati International Marathon

First Guwahati International Marathon on February 7, 2027

Guwahati, September 10, 2026: Guwahati is set to make its mark on the international running calendar with the inaugural Guwahati International Marathon, scheduled to be held on February 7, 2027. The event was formally launched on September 10 by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar.

The marathon is expected to bring together around 12,000 participants from India and abroad, including elite athletes, professional runners, running clubs, fitness enthusiasts and amateur participants. Organised by Professional Management Group (PMG) Sports LLP, with the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) as state sponsor, the event carries a total prize purse of ₹1.25 crore.

The inaugural edition will feature five race categories — the 42.195-km full marathon, 21.097-km half marathon, 10-km run, 5-km run and 1.5-km inclusive run. Organisers expect the flagship full marathon to feature around 30 leading male and female distance runners from across the world, alongside some of India’s top long-distance athletes.

Indian badminton star PV Sindhu has been named the brand ambassador of the event. Her association is expected to strengthen the marathon’s focus on fitness, sporting excellence and youth participation.

Speaking about the event, Sunil Gavaskar said the marathon was envisioned as a platform that could help position Guwahati as one of the world’s prominent marathon cities. The event is also being promoted as an opportunity to showcase Assam and the Northeast as destinations for sports tourism.

The marathon will combine elite competition with mass participation, allowing experienced athletes to compete alongside families, corporate groups, young runners and fitness enthusiasts. The shorter 5-km and 1.5-km categories are designed to encourage wider community participation.

The event is also expected to provide a boost to tourism and the local economy by bringing visitors and athletes to Guwahati. Organisers are positioning the race as more than a sporting competition, with the city’s landscape, the Brahmaputra and Assamese culture forming an important part of the overall experience.

With its international field, substantial prize purse and emphasis on sports tourism, the Guwahati International Marathon is being positioned as a major addition to Assam’s sporting calendar and an attempt to place the Northeast more prominently on India’s growing road-racing map.
